We were delighted to be invited by artist Mark Ware to build an accessible WordPress site for his ongoing Arts Council funded project Cathedra900 . Cathedra 900 is a multimedia art project created by artist Mark Ware that is being presented within Exeter Cathedral. The ‘900’ in the project’s title refers to the estimated age of the building. There are a number of different projects culminating in a live multimedia performance in September 2013.
Accessibility is a priority for Mark as in 1996 he suffered a stroke which badly affected both his physical and cognitive abilities. Although keen to adhere to established guidelines Mark was also keen to create a site that was ‘naturally’ accessible and we were keen to help. Along with following the established guidelines we added a theme switching facility that shows the site in a variety of high contrast colour schemes to assist those with different varieties of visual impairments. In addition we implemented a zooming text function to increase text size which responds gracefully to the rest of the design.
The Cathedra900 site will continue to grow alongside the project, which thanks to Mark, is constantly evolving. Its hard to say exactly what shape the site might take next, be it an archive for the proposed writing workshops, a live streaming portal for the multimedia performances, maybe everything else in between. The one thing we can say for certain is the project will evolve and we are honoured to be involved. Watch this space!!
